Moses

Part 18 – When Big Shoes Need to be Filled

Numbers 27:12-21

1) God always has a person to fulfill a vital ministry opening!

27 “How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites. 28 So tell them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord, I will do to you the very thing I heard you say: 29 In this wilderness your bodies will fall—every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me. 30 Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb… and Joshua. Numbers 14:27-30

The Lord chose to fill Moses’ big shoes.

28 Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses’ aide since youth… Numbers 11:28.

The Lord will use godly men and women in your life to you to Him in vital, volunteer ministry roles!

2) God’s glorious work , even when an important leader moves on.

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain in the Abarim Range and see the land I have given the Israelites. 13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, Numbers 27:12-13

15 Moses said to the Lord, 16 “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.” Numbers 27:15-17

Moses made two requests regarding his successor.

  • Moses wanted his successor to be .

16 “May the Lord,.. appoint someone over this community. Numbers 27:16.

—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2b.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2

If you want to experience God’s good, perfect and pleasing will for your life, then commit to live a life that is holy, from culture, striving to honor Christ… And let Him your mind

  • Moses wanted his successor to have a .

17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.” Numbers 27:17

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

He makes me lie down in green pastures,

he leads me beside quiet waters,

he refreshes my soul.

He guides me along the right paths

    for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk

    through the darkest valley,

I will fear no evil,

    for you are with me;

your rod and your staff,

    they comfort me. Psalm 23:1-4

14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. John 10:14-15

In part, the greatest of anyone in a shepherding, pastoral, leadership role is .

18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him. Numbers 27:18

19 Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. 20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him. 21 He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.” Numbers 27:19-21

3 Important Takeaways!

1) When ministry openings appear, God always !

2) When God appoints, He and !

3) When God approves and equips, His leader always !
