Follow Me: Becoming a Disciple of Jesus

Part 7 – What did Jesus teach about praying?

Matthew 6:5-13

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Matthew 6:5-8

MISCONCEPTION #1 – Prayer should .

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. Matthew 6:5

MISCONCEPTION #2 – Prayer should always be .

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Matthew 6:6

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ Luke 18:13.

MISCONCEPTION #3 – Prayer should about my expectations.

Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Matthew 6:8

“Prayer is not pushing our will into the heavens; prayer is getting God’s will down to earth.” — Greg Laurie

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray,”… Luke 11:1

“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

10 your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us today our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.’

Matthew 6:9-13

Six Prayer Principles

  1. Recognize in my prayer.

9 …“‘Our Father in heaven, Matthew 6:9a

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3:1

2. Acknowledge the

9 …“‘Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name, Matthew 6:9b

When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. James 4:3

3. Learn the and pray for it!

10 your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:10

14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. 1 John 5:14-15

But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. James 1:6-7.

  • Pray that God would make you and that you would know His will.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2

  • Pray that God would bring revival and in our nation.

14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

4. Ask God to provide

11 Give us today our daily bread. Matthew 6:11

5. Confess your sins and .

12 And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors. Matthew 6:12

18 If I had cherished sin in my heart,

the Lord would not have listened; Psalm 66:12

6. Pursue against the evil in this world!

13 And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.’ Matthew 6:13

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. Ephesians 6:10-11
