Part 4 – Doing the Word
James 1:19-27
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. James 1:22
Three ways we can do the Word…
1) the Word to in your life!
19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil
that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. James 1:19-21
3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.” Matthew 13:3-9
Four types of hearts or soils:
- The heart did not accept or receive the Word and produced no fruit.
- The heart was emotional but lacked depth and produced no fruit.
- The heart lacked repentance, allowed sin and produced no fruit.
- The heart accepted the Word, allowed it to take root and produced abundant fruit!
Fruit is evidenced by what you do for Christ:
- the you reach (Rom 1:16),
- the life you lead (Rom 6:22),
- the material possessions you away (Rom 15:28),
- the you exhibit (Gal 5:22ff),
- the you do (Col 1:10),
- the you offer the Lord (Heb 13:15)
Three characteristics of a believer who is permitting the Word to take root in their lives. 19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, James 1:19
- Eager .
- Slow .
- Right .
12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrew 4:12
21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. James 1:21
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
2) the Word!
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. James 1:22-25
Three critical mistakes that we can make when we look into God’s mirror (His Word):
Mistake 1 – too quickly at ourselves. 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away… James 1:24a
Mistake 2 – what we see. 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. James 1:24
Mistake 3 – to obey what we’re to do. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. James 1:25.
3) the Word!
26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. James 1:26-27
