James 4:13-17

13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. 17 So then, if you know the good you ought to do and don’t do it, you sin. James 4:13–17 (TNIV)

James distinguishes between living a life of arrogance and living a life of humble submission to God.

  1. The Person
    • The arrogant person lives life with to thought of God.
    • The one who plans their life with no consideration of God’s will acts as a .
    • Is it wrong to make plans for the future?
    • The proud, self-dependent person fails to understand that life is or as James says is a .
  2. The Person
    • A God-dependent, humble person recognizes God’s over all aspects of life.
    • Recognizing the brevity of life should motivate us to live every day for the .
  3. Now We Know
    • Now that we know what to do, we should Why? Because it is to know what to do, yet fail to do it.
    • James is telling us something about the sin of as opposed to the sin of .

Application

  1. Consider in what ways you might now be pursuing your own plans without any consideration of God’s will or guidance.
  2. Do your plans align with God’s Word?
  3. Begin every day by spending time with the Lord. It is difficult to carry out your day with a God-directed mindset if you have not even given Him a thought or spent any time with Him. Meet with the Lord in prayer and in His Word so you can feed your soul and prepare for the day ahead.
  4. Are there any areas of your life that God has called you to, yet you have ignored or put off? Don’t wait, but instead, act upon what God has called you to do.
