Part 6 – Emulating Excellent Examples
Philippians 2:19-30
19 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you. 20 I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare. 21 For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. 22 But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel. 23 I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me. 24 And I am confident in the Lord that I myself will come soon.
25 But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs. 26 For he longs for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill. 27 Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow. 28 Therefore I am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety. 29 So then, welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him, 30 because he almost died for the work of Christ. He risked his life to make up for the help you yourselves could not give me. Philippians 2:19-30
1) Timothy was where others weren’t.
20 I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare. Philippians 2:20
2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Philippians 2:2
17 For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church. 1 Corinthians 4:17
2) Timothy was where others weren’t.
20 I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare. Philippians 2:20
3) Timothy was more concerned about Jesus than himself.
21 For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. Philippians 2:21
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:3-4
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, Matthew 28:19a.
What are other practical ways that we can embrace the interests of Jesus?
13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” Romans 10:13-15
15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 1 Peter 3:15
Philippians 2:25-30
1) Epaphroditus was a believer. (Phil. 2:25)
2) Epaphroditus was a believer. (Phil 2:26-27;30)
3) Epaphroditus was a believer. (Phil 2:27;29-30)
12 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13
