Part 2 – Thriving in a Field of Weeds
Matthew 13:24-30;36-43
24 Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.
27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’
28 “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied.
“The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’
29 “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’” Matthew 13:24-30
36 Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”
37 He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.
40 “As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42 They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears, let them hear. Matthew 13:36-43
- Who is the sower of the good seed?
- Who are the good seed?
- What is the field?
- Who are the weeds?
- Who is the sower of the weeds?
The aim of Jesus’ Parable of the Weeds is to distinguish between those who embrace and those who embrace .
Christ meets us right where we are, but He doesn’t leave us there… He makes us !
2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2
When will Jesus return?
6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. Acts 1:6-7
32 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. Mark 13:32-33
While we , we are to be Jesus’ !
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8
Believers always , eagerly awaiting and anticipating Jesus’ return!
Two important questions to ask myself:
1) “Am I when Jesus returns or when my days on this earth are over?”
2) “Have I done all I can to I know and love for Jesus’ return or the end of their days?”
What does a witness do?
A witness shares what they , what they’ve seen, what they’ve experienced…. the , the whole and nothing but the !
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6
In this parable, Jesus draws a marked between the church and the world.
4 A wicked and adulterous generation… Matthew 16:4
17 “…unbelieving and perverse generation,” Matthew 17:17
15 ….a warped and crooked generation.” Philippians 2:15
The church, the committed followers of Jesus are situated in a culture that is to Christ and to those who follow Him.
Three Ways Believers Are Distinctive:
1) We can live in the !
7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 1 John 3:7-8
2) We are !
15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15-16.
8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. James 4:8
3) We will be His in this !
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16
43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears, let them hear. Matthew 13:43
