Who is Jesus?

Part 8 – The True Vine

John 15:1-8

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. John 15:1-8

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5

1) Living a results from fruit!

This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. John 15:8

10 …I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10b

Fruit represents those you help to Jesus! 19 Therefore go and make disciples… Matthew 28:19

Fruit involves becoming more ! 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, Romans 6:22

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23

Fruit includes generous and joyful ! 7 …God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7. 35 …the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” Acts 20:35

Fruit embodies every ! 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, Colossians 1:10

Fruit expresses sincere ! 15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. Hebrews 13:15

2) fruit results from in Christ!

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. John 15:1-2

Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:4-5

To “abide” or “remain” means: “an inward, enduring, personal .”

If you aren’t sure what it looks like to abide in Christ, ask yourself some questions:

  • Do I value meeting with the Lord daily to commune with Him?
  • Do I thank Him throughout the day every day for His help in life?
  • Do I lean on Him for guidance and encouragement continually daily?
  • Do I confess and repent of my sins immediately to keep that relationship healthy?
  • Do I seek His will in all my decisions?

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17

3) in Christ results from Christ.

5 …apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5

10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. John 15:10

4) Christ results from Christ.

15 “If you love me, keep my commands.” John 14:15
