Who Is Jesus?: Part 1 Getting to Know Him

March 22, 2026   /   Watermark

Who Is Jesus?

Part 1 – Getting to Know Him

Many people know about Jesus, but far fewer actually know who Jesus is.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8

Why is your purpose on this earth?

To know Who God is and what His name is!

Why is it so important for me to know God personally?

  1. Knowing God personally is the only way for me to be saved by Him!

Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. John 17:3.

2) Knowing God personally inspires me to worship Him!

35 …“Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”

37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”

38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. John 9:35-38

3) Knowing God personally causes me to be changed by Him!

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17

4) Knowing God personally is the only way to truly serve Him!

2 …Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. Exodus 3:2

What did this remarkable burning bush signify to Moses and what does it signify to us?

1) It revealed the holiness of God!

2) It revealed the grace of God!

So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians Exodus 3:8

13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” Exodus 3:13

14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:14

The name I AM comes from the Hebrew word YHWH.

This name could be translated: “I am who and what I am, and I do not change; I am with you and I am for you.”

“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. Exodus 20:7

In nine places in the Old Testament, the Lord “filled out” or “completed” the name I AM to more fully reveal His divine nature and His ministry to His people:

Yahweh-Jireh: The Lord will provide or see to it. (Genesis 22:7)

Yahweh-Rophe: The Lord Who heals. (Exodus 15:26)

Yahweh-Nissi: The Lord our Banner. (Exodus 17:15)

Yahweh-M’kaddesh: The Lord Who sanctifies. (Leviticus 20:8)

Yahweh-Shalom: The Lord our Peace. (Judges 6:24)

Yahweh-Rohi: The Lord my Shepherd. (Psalm 23:1)

Yahweh-Sabaoth: The Lord of hosts. (Psalm 46:7)

Yahweh-Tsidkenu: The Lord our Righteousness. (Jeremiah 23:6)

Yahweh-Shammah: The Lord is there. (Ezekiel 48:35)

Who, being in very nature God,

    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;

rather, he made himself nothing

by taking the very nature of a servant,

    being made in human likeness.

And being found in appearance as a man,

    he humbled himself

    by becoming obedient to death—

even death on a cross! Philippians 2:6-8

30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. John 20:30-31

The I AM statements of Jesus answer three vital, life-changing questions for you and me:

  • Who is Jesus?
  • What can He do for me?
  • What can I become through Him?

18 And we all, who with unveiled faces reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18
