John 8:31-36; Galatians 5:1,13

How do people really think about freedom?

36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36

31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:31-36

I. The for Freedom

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23.

33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” John 8:33

II. The of Freedom

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1

1. The Problem: Sin us all!

We are spiritually “yoked” in at least three ways:

• The of sin.

2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face

from you, so that he will not hear. Isaiah 59:2

21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. Colossians 1:21

23 For the wages of sin is death, Romans 6:23a

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; Galatians 5:19-21

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1

2. The : of Freedom

21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— Colossians 1:21-22

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— Ephesians 2:8

57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17. Placing your faith in Jesus begins a dramatic transformation in your life… a life with consequential purpose!

III. The of Freedom

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23

13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. Galatians 5:13
